A Delhi executive magistrate ordered the release of Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke and leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka on Sunday, a day after police detained them aboard an aircraft that had landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The three had travelled from Mumbai for a protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral-roll revisions. Police denied permission for the demonstration under prohibitory orders and placed the leaders under preventive arrest. Scroll.in reported that their release was conditioned on maintaining peace for one year.
Police imposed extensive restrictions ahead of Saturday’s protest, including barricades, metro-station closures and a suspension of mobile internet in central Delhi. Accounts of the number detained varied: a police source told Reuters about 200 people were detained in central New Delhi, while Delhi Police told The Indian Express that about 7,000 people attempting to reach Jantar Mantar were detained. YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, detained in Gurugram, was released early Sunday.
On Monday, Dipke accused Delhi Police of denying him access to his lawyer and withholding his location from his family. He also asked police to release the full video of officers informing him during detention that his grandmother had died, saying the published clip was edited. Police said officers acted sensitively, offered travel assistance and repeatedly offered to facilitate calls to his family, which he declined.
