Navratri began across India on Sunday, October 11, launching nine nights of worship and festivities dedicated to Goddess Durga and her nine forms. The observance runs through October 20, when the tenth day is celebrated as Dussehra or Vijayadashami.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the occasion by extending greetings to the country. In Hindi-language posts on X, he wished for Goddess Durga’s grace to bring happiness, peace, prosperity and good health, and said he hoped the festival would strengthen national unity and progress. Modi also offered prayers to Goddess Shailputri, worshipped on the first day of Navratri.
Celebrations vary by region. Eastern and northeastern states observe Durga Puja, while many communities in northern India stage Ramlila performances recounting Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana. Garba dancing is central to festivities in Gujarat.
Some Garba events in Gujarat are offering increasingly expensive premium packages this year. An Ahmedabad event advertised services including a personal bouncer, private butler, meals and gift hampers, with tickets starting at ₹999. In Vadodara, offerings range from a ₹2,500 season pass to a ₹1.21 lakh VIP table for 10.
The state-organised Vibrant Navratri Festival in Ahmedabad has also introduced a ₹100 ticket for its Garba area, while keeping its children’s and entertainment zone free. Gujarat Tourism Secretary Kuldeep Arya told The Indian Express that the charge was intended to help manage access and arrangements rather than recover costs.
