Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called a snap general election for November 29, bringing forward a vote that had been scheduled for 2027 after his minority government suffered a parliamentary defeat over proposed housing measures.
Announcing the decision at Madrid’s Moncloa Palace on Monday, Sanchez said his government needed renewed public support and would seek a broader progressive majority in parliament. He presented the election as a choice between continued policies focused on openness, social justice and environmental responsibility and what he described as a “far-right wave.”
The announcement followed lawmakers’ rejection on Friday of measures intended to address Spain’s housing crisis, including automatic extensions of tenancy contracts and restrictions on evicting vulnerable tenants. The defeat underscored the coalition’s difficulty passing legislation in a fragmented parliament. Spain has not approved a new national budget since 2023.
Housing costs have also prompted widespread demonstrations. Tens of thousands of people marched in Madrid and other cities on Saturday demanding more affordable housing, while protesters established a tent camp in central Madrid following the eviction of an 87-year-old woman from her longtime apartment.
Sanchez had previously said his government would complete its four-year term. Recent opinion polls generally place the conservative Popular Party ahead of Sanchez’s Socialist Workers’ Party, with some indicating that the Popular Party could govern with support from the right-wing Vox party.
