Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for a criminal investigation into the anonymous military sources featured in *NAZA*, an award-winning documentary alleging that Israel used artificial intelligence-assisted targeting systems in attacks that killed Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
The film draws on testimony from 24 unnamed Israeli military whistleblowers. Netanyahu said the military chief, the head of the Shin Bet security agency and the attorney general should investigate participants for suspected information-security violations, criminal libel and harm to Israel’s diplomatic and security interests. Israeli military Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has also ordered an investigation into possible leaks of classified information and asked that legal action be considered.
The Israeli military has rejected the whistleblowers’ allegations, describing some as contradictory or “absurd.” It said humans alone select and approve strikes under military guidelines. A separate film, *NAZA: The Real Story*, presents testimony from soldiers disputing the original documentary’s claims.
*NAZA*, directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, won a special jury prize at the Venice International Film Festival. Its title refers to an Israeli military abbreviation for civilian casualties expected in airstrikes. Netanyahu and Culture Minister Miki Zohar have threatened to revoke the directors’ Israeli citizenship, while 43 Israeli rights groups have defended the filmmakers and denounced threats against them, according to Israel’s Channel 12.
