An attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh killed 12 people and injured more than 300 on Saturday, Saudi civil aviation authorities said early Sunday. Some of the injured were in critical condition and were being treated at several hospitals.
The dead included four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshi nationals and citizens of the United States, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Sudan, according to the Saudi statement. It did not assign responsibility. UN Secretary-General António Guterres attributed the attack to Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis and called for an immediate end to attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.
A missile struck an airport complex containing two domestic terminals, a regional official told The Associated Press. Airport operations were suspended, entrances were blocked and flights were diverted. Riyadh schools subsequently switched to remote learning.
The strike followed several attacks during the previous week on Saudi airports, military sites and oil infrastructure amid intensified fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces in Yemen. Saudi authorities also reported that a projectile fell near King Fahd International Airport in Dammam and that a Houthi-launched ballistic missile was intercepted southeast of Riyadh later Saturday.
India condemned attacks on the Riyadh airport and Abha International Airport, expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and advised its approximately 2.74 million citizens in the kingdom to remain vigilant, stay indoors when necessary and follow official instructions. Several countries warned their citizens to avoid the Riyadh airport.
