Bulgaria ends search for 10 sailors after drones sink cargo ship

Bulgarian authorities have called off the search for 10 sailors missing after drones struck two commercial vessels in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, sinking one and damaging the other.

The Turkish-owned, Togo-flagged *Alfa Watan* sank after suffering severe structural damage in Tuesday’s attack off the coastal town of Byala. Bulgaria said no trace had been found of its nine Syrian and one Egyptian crew members. Officials recovered a boat, three life rafts and pieces of ship equipment before ending the operation on Wednesday.

Syria called on Bulgaria and the International Maritime Organization to investigate why the search was halted before the crew’s fate was established and urged authorities to use all available means to examine the wreck.

The Palau-flagged *Able* caught fire after being hit in the same incident. All 18 crew members, including Turkish and Indian nationals, were rescued by Bulgarian vessels. Two sailors were seriously injured and taken to a hospital in Varna.

The drones’ origin has not been independently established. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blamed Russia and said Ukrainian forces were not operating in the area. Russia’s embassy in Sofia denied involvement. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said the ships’ cargoes and directions pointed logically toward Russia but stressed that Bulgaria lacked evidence to assign responsibility.

Bulgarian officials said they may seek additional NATO air and maritime surveillance and counter-drone capabilities.
