Federal immigration agents searched Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area home before dawn Monday as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation, the Justice Department said.
A department spokesperson said Homeland Security Investigations, a division of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Justice Department. Officials did not publicly specify the focus of the investigation. Fox News and other outlets, citing unidentified or unnamed sources, reported that it concerns alleged immigration fraud and paperwork submitted by Omar’s late father when she was a child.
Omar, who was born in Somalia and represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, said she was unharmed and denied wrongdoing. “Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” she wrote online, adding that she would not be silenced. Her communications director, Jacklyn Rogers, called the search an abuse of power and said the congresswoman had done nothing wrong.
The search occurred 22 days before the November 3 midterm elections, in which Omar is seeking re-election. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and House Democratic leaders accused President Donald Trump’s administration of targeting a political opponent and called for transparency and accountability.
White House border czar Tom Homan told Fox Business Network that the Justice Department was leading the investigation in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security but declined to discuss its specifics.
