The US military said it disabled a Panama-flagged commercial cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman after its crew ignored repeated warnings and attempted to breach a naval blockade against Iran.
US Central Command said a fighter jet struck the stern of the M/V Ocean Molica, also known as the Arika Sun, with a precision munition on October 10. The strike disabled the ship’s propulsion without injuring its crew, according to CENTCOM. The vessel had previously departed an Iranian port and was attempting to transit regional waters, the command said.
CENTCOM described the action as part of enforcement of a US blockade covering ships entering or leaving Iranian ports. It said enforcement resumed on July 14 and that US forces had since disabled four commercial vessels and turned back 135 ships. The command also claimed US forces had destroyed 10 tankers linked to what it called the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ “shadow network” during the same three-month period.
CENTCOM advised mariners operating near the Gulf of Oman and the approaches to the Strait of Hormuz to follow blockade warnings, monitor maritime notices and contact US naval forces by radio.
