Hurricane Simon weakened from a Category 4 to a Category 3 storm as it moved parallel to Mexico’s Pacific coast, bringing heavy rain, flooding and dangerous coastal conditions to west-central states.

At 6 p.m. local time Sunday, Simon had maximum sustained winds of 205 km/h (127 mph) and was about 175 km (109 miles) west-northwest of Manzanillo, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. The storm was moving northwest at 7 km/h (4 mph) and was expected to remain a strong hurricane while passing near the coast before moving farther offshore Monday. Forecasters said it could turn back toward Mexico on Wednesday.

Residents waded through flooded streets in Manzanillo, where soldiers helped families remove water from homes. Authorities warned of destructive waves, storm surge and life-threatening floods and mudslides, particularly in mountainous areas. Total rainfall could reach 762 mm (30 inches) in parts of Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco.

President Claudia Sheinbaum urged residents in coastal areas of Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Michoacán to remain sheltered until officials declared the danger over. Twenty-eight municipalities in Jalisco and Colima were placed under the highest cyclone alert, with another 93 under high alert. Classes and nonessential activities were suspended in affected areas, emergency shelters opened and evacuations began.

Puerto Vallarta International Airport temporarily closed, while businesses boarded windows and placed sandbags at entrances. Officials reported waves as high as eight metres (26 feet) along parts of Jalisco’s coast.
