Leaders of India’s youth-led online “cockroach” movement were released Sunday after being detained a day earlier as authorities sought to prevent a major protest in New Delhi over disputed voter-roll revisions.
A court ordered Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke and two other senior leaders freed after they agreed to maintain public peace, according to the group. Police had detained them when their plane landed in Delhi on Saturday, ahead of a planned gathering at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The CJP said thousands of protesters were detained before Saturday’s demonstration. Hundreds more were detained Sunday as students and other activists held sporadic protests around the capital, Reuters reported. The All India Students’ Association alleged that police assaulted some detainees inside vehicles, but Reuters said it could not verify the claim. Delhi Police did not respond to its requests for comment.
The protests followed weeks of opposition mobilization over allegations of misconduct during a nationwide revision of voter lists. Critics say the changes disproportionately benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an allegation cited by demonstrators seeking Kumar’s resignation.
After their release, movement leaders pledged to continue the campaign. The CJP also demanded that Delhi Police provide a date within 24 hours for another protest or said it would call a new demonstration.
