Yorkshire Wildlife Park said an Amur tiger that fatally attacked a man who entered its enclosure will not be euthanised.
The man scaled a fence and entered the enclosure near Doncaster on Saturday afternoon, according to the Guardian. South Yorkshire Police said the tiger, named Altai, attacked him and caused serious injuries. Emergency personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene despite efforts to save him.
The Guardian reported that the man had been named locally as William Chapman and was believed to be in his 20s, but police had not formally identified him as of Tuesday. His family is being supported by specialist officers.
The park was evacuated after the attack and remained closed Tuesday. It said Altai was safe and uninjured, while staff affected by the incident were receiving specialist support.
Doncaster council, the park’s licensing authority, has opened a health and safety investigation and is working with police and health agencies. The park said it was cooperating with authorities to establish what happened.
Police urged the public not to share distressing footage circulating online. The Guardian reported that some AI-generated fake videos were also shared after the attack.
Foreign Secretary and Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband offered condolences to the man’s family and thanked emergency services and park staff for their response.
