Apple has unveiled HomeView, a seven-inch smart display and speaker designed to serve as a household information and smart-home control center. The device is a centerpiece of Apple’s broader smart-home push and showcases the company’s updated Siri AI.
HomeView draws personalized information from a user’s iPhone or iPad and surfaces recently used apps. Through Apple’s Home app, users can view live camera feeds and operate compatible devices such as locks, thermostats and lighting. Engadget reported that demonstrations included products from LG and Schneider Electric, with the display responding quickly when loading controls and camera feeds.
The updated Siri can use information from an iPhone to interpret requests with personal context, such as identifying a song mentioned in a text message. HomeView also includes a Safari recipe mode that extracts ingredients and directions from appropriately formatted webpages, offers inline timer controls and accepts recipes handed off from a nearby iPhone.
The aluminum-framed device will be offered in tabletop and wall-mounted configurations. The tabletop stand contains additional speakers to boost lower frequencies, while two full-range drivers are built into the display. HomeView also supports FaceTime and music playback.
Reports ahead of Apple’s event also pointed to a new Apple TV 4K and a second-generation HomePod mini, though details of those products were not included.
