YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was released early Sunday after being detained at his Gurugram home on Saturday as authorities sought to prevent protesters from gathering at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
The demonstration, organised by the Cockroach Janta Party and Left-affiliated student groups, called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign over alleged irregularities linked to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Police had denied permission for the protest and imposed prohibitory orders.
The Hindu reported that Gurugram police released Rathee at about 2 a.m. without filing charges. A police source told PTI that he could face renewed detention or further legal action if he attempted to reach Jantar Mantar despite the restrictions.
Rathee later alleged that plainclothes officers had “kidnapped” him and held him without formally arresting or detaining him. He displayed his passport in a video while rejecting claims that he was not an Indian citizen and said he had intended to join the demonstration.
Police sources cited by The Hindu said more than 7,000 people were detained at multiple locations; The Indian Express put the number at more than 6,000. Those detained included opposition leaders, activists and social media creators. Several CJP leaders were also subsequently released.
Bharatiya Kisan Union members held related protests in western Uttar Pradesh. Delhi Police detained a BKU delegation led by national general secretary Yudhvir Singh while it was travelling to Jantar Mantar.
