Google has unveiled the Fitbit Edge, a $179.99 fitness tracker positioned between the screenless Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5. Preorders are open through the Google Store, with retail availability scheduled for October 27.
The Edge has a 1.34-inch OLED display, a physical side button and a redesigned Fitbit operating system. It can show notifications, weather, music controls and workout guidance, while turn-by-turn Google Maps directions are expected later this year. The device lacks a microphone, speaker and NFC, so it cannot handle wrist-based calls or contactless payments.
Health sensors include optical heart-rate monitoring, ECG, blood-oxygen and skin-temperature sensors. Google says upgraded automatic activity detection can identify up to 100 activities, while the tracker supports more than 50 exercise modes. The company also claims its built-in GPS is 40% more accurate than the previous generation and sleep-stage detection is 15% more accurate than earlier devices.
The IP68-rated tracker is water-resistant to 50 meters. Its user-replaceable battery is rated for up to seven days, falling to about two days with the always-on display enabled. Google says five minutes of charging supplies roughly one day of use, while a full charge takes 90 minutes.
Google Health Premium subscribers can use Gemini-powered Health Coach features for adaptive routines and workout plans. The purchase includes three months of the service. The Edge comes in Obsidian, Fog, Olive and Canyon; a $219.99 Stephen Curry Special Edition adds a themed face and sport band.
