Delhi Police detained several leaders of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party on Tuesday after protesters entered the barricaded Jantar Mantar site in New Delhi, according to the group and news reports.
A video posted by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke showed protesters climbing over barricades, running onto the site and waving India’s flag before police pursued them. The group said those detained included Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde. Reuters and the BBC also reported that leaders of the movement were detained.
The action followed a Delhi Police order removing Jantar Mantar from the capital’s designated protest venues. Police named Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in Shahdara as alternatives. Jantar Mantar had been sealed with metal barricades and guarded by a heavy police presence for several days.
CJP and opposition supporters have held demonstrations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They allege that irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls resulted in voters being improperly removed and benefited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party. The Election Commission of India has denied wrongdoing.
Authorities imposed extensive restrictions ahead of an October 10 protest call, including transport disruptions and a temporary mobile-internet suspension in parts of central Delhi. CJP also claimed thousands of supporters had been detained nationwide before the planned demonstration, but that figure was not independently verified.
