Hurricane Simon battered Mexico’s Pacific coast on Sunday with heavy rain, strong winds and flooding as it moved northwest parallel to the shoreline toward the Puerto Vallarta area.
The storm had weakened from Category 4 to Category 3, with maximum sustained winds of about 205 kph (125 mph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Its eye remained offshore Sunday afternoon, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Cabo Corrientes, but hurricane-force winds extended up to 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds up to 95 kilometers (59 miles).
Forecasters warned of destructive winds, dangerous storm surge, large waves, flooding and mudslides along Mexico’s west-central coast. The hurricane center said parts of Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa could receive additional rainfall through early Thursday, with isolated storm totals reaching 76 centimeters (30 inches) in Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco.
Authorities placed 28 municipalities in Jalisco and Colima under the highest cyclone alert and another 93 under high alert. Puerto Vallarta International Airport temporarily closed, nonessential activities were suspended and emergency shelters opened in threatened communities. Police and National Guard personnel urged people near Puerto Vallarta’s waterfront to take shelter.
In Manzanillo, residents waded through flooded streets Sunday while soldiers assisted with rescues. President Claudia Sheinbaum urged residents in coastal areas of Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Michoacán to remain indoors. Forecasters expected Simon to weaken while passing near the coast Sunday night, move farther offshore Monday and turn back toward Mexico on Wednesday.
