Ukrainian officials rejected US President Donald Trump’s call for the country to choose a new leader, as Kyiv continued drone strikes against infrastructure inside Russia.
Trump said Saturday that it was time for Ukraine to have a new president, arguing that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had passed up opportunities to reach an agreement ending the war. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha responded that Zelenskyy was leading Ukraine through a war for independence and that only Ukrainians had the right to choose their president.
Zelenskyy said Russia alone was responsible for the war and defended Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries. He said Kyiv would halt those strikes if Moscow stopped attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure, adding that any de-escalation must be reciprocal and supported by guarantees.
The dispute followed Trump’s agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to purchase Russian diesel. Ukrainian and European officials criticized the arrangement, saying the revenue would support Russia’s war effort. Trump has also urged Ukraine to stop targeting Russian energy facilities.
Elon Musk endorsed Trump’s criticism in a comment beneath a White House social media post containing video of the president’s remarks. “Zelenskyy has gone too far,” Musk wrote.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone attack shut down a data center operated by Russian technology company Yandex, the Taipei Times reported, describing it as the third strike on the company’s facilities in four days.
