EU approves record expansion of Russia sanctions list

publishers 27articles 30first reported 5 Oct, 06:29 UTCdeveloping since 5 Oct · 16 editions

European Union foreign ministers approved the bloc’s largest expansion of Russia-related sanctions listings since Moscow began its full-scale war against Ukraine, targeting nearly 1,600 people and companies linked to Russia’s military-industrial complex.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said more than half of those listed were connected to the production chain for ballistic missiles. The measures are intended to make it harder, slower and more expensive for Russia to manufacture weapons used in Ukraine. The EU also targeted 77 people and groups associated with elections held in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories, according to Deutsche Welle.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called the package an “unprecedented sanction blow” and said it would impede Russia’s war effort. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged Western governments to consider still tougher measures.

The action came amid European criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning supplies of Russian diesel to the United States and global markets. Kallas said suspending sanctions on Russian diesel would provide Moscow with additional war revenue and pledged that Europe would not ease pressure. European leaders cited continuing Russian attacks in Ukraine and stepped-up hybrid activity against EU and NATO countries.
