NASA’s Perseverance rover has traveled farther across the surface of another world than any vehicle before it, surpassing the distance covered by the Opportunity rover.
Perseverance reached 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometers) of travel on Mars on Oct. 11, edging past Opportunity’s record of 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometers), according to Space.com. Perseverance achieved the milestone about 5½ years after landing in Jezero Crater in February 2021, while Opportunity accumulated its distance over roughly 14 years.
The car-sized, six-wheeled rover is exploring ancient Martian terrain as part of its mission to investigate whether conditions suitable for microbial life once existed and to collect samples that could reveal more about the planet’s history.
Mission engineers believe Perseverance could eventually travel as far as 100 kilometers. Mark Maimone, a rover driver at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told Space.com that the rover had already more than doubled its original design target of about 20 kilometers. Deputy project scientist Vivian Sun said its original capabilities, particularly its scientific instruments, remain largely intact.
