Pakistan imposed emergency rule in north-western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and suspended its provincial government on Sunday, placing the stronghold of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party under the authority of the provincial governor.
President Asif Ali Zardari’s administration said the PTI-led provincial government had failed to address rising Islamist militancy in the region bordering Afghanistan. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the arrangement would initially last six months, while the Interior Ministry said troops would be deployed. Pakistan’s constitution permits the federal government to assume some or all provincial functions during an emergency.
PTI rejected the government’s justification, describing the measure as undemocratic and intended to prevent supporters from marching to Islamabad to demand Khan’s release. The party also says the federal government has not supplied sufficient funding and equipment to combat militants.
Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and several cabinet members were taken into preventive custody at the chief minister’s residence in Peshawar, Junior Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry told Reuters. An administrative official told AFP that Afridi was later moved to an undisclosed location. Police officials told AFP that 278 PTI members had been detained in the province since the emergency declaration. Khan’s three sisters and hundreds of supporters were also reported detained ahead of the planned march.
Chaudhry said detainees facing cases would be charged and tried, while others would be released. PTI officials demanded their release.
