Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned Tuesday as U.S. ambassador to Greece after President Donald Trump asked her to step down amid reports alleging improper conduct, the New York Post reported.
Her departure came a day after Trump said his administration was “looking at” whether to fire her. “We’re not happy,” he told reporters Monday. On Tuesday, Trump said Guilfoyle had been doing a good job but added, “we didn’t like what we were reading.”
The Wall Street Journal has reported allegations that Guilfoyle sought $100,000 from former Republican congressional candidate Eric Deters to cover a credit-card bill, offered to use her administration influence in return, threatened a Greek official and accepted improper gifts or services, including private-plane travel and luxury accommodations.
Guilfoyle’s lawyers denied wrongdoing. They said the money sought from Deters was payment for public appearances and speaking engagements predating her ambassadorial nomination. They also said Guilfoyle sought and followed State Department guidance before traveling on private aircraft.
A U.S. official told The Associated Press that the State Department inspector general was reviewing the allegations, although the official could not confirm whether a formal investigation had begun.
In announcing her resignation, Guilfoyle said her support for Trump remained unwavering and vowed to “vigorously defend” her reputation and integrity. Sen. John Curtis, a Utah Republican, praised the administration for taking the allegations seriously.
