Delhi Police detained Cockroach Janta Party leaders Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das and Ajinkya Shinde on Tuesday after they entered Jantar Mantar, according to party founder Abhijeet Dipke. A CJP volunteer told Scroll.in that the leaders and other members were taken to Jaffarpur Kalan police station.
The detentions followed an order removing Jantar Mantar from Delhi’s list of designated protest sites. The order, based on recommendations from a Union Home Ministry committee, named Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in Shahdara as alternatives.
CJP, opposition parties and Left-affiliated student groups have held demonstrations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over concerns about the Election Commission’s handling of revisions to electoral rolls.
Police detained Dipke, Ranka and Das inside an aircraft after it landed in Delhi on Saturday, ahead of a planned demonstration. A Delhi executive magistrate ordered their release on Sunday on the condition that they maintain the peace for one year. YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and other protesters detained during Saturday’s crackdown were also released.
Dipke separately accused police of denying him access to a lawyer and failing to tell his family where he was held. The dispute followed the release of police video showing officers informing him during detention that his grandmother had died. Police said officers offered to arrange calls and transportation for him; Dipke said the footage was edited and called for the full recording to be released.
