Police detained more than 2,000 people in Delhi on Saturday as authorities sealed off parts of the capital to prevent a youth-led demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Thousands of police and paramilitary personnel were deployed, while dozens of metro stations and markets were closed and mobile internet service was suspended in the central business district. Roads around Jantar Mantar, where the Cockroach Janta Party had planned to rally, were barricaded after police denied permission for the gathering. Several trains to Delhi were also cancelled.
A Home Ministry official, speaking anonymously to Reuters, said more than 2,000 people were detained. The movement said its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, and senior leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained after arriving at Delhi airport from Mumbai. Police also detained protesters who gathered in smaller groups elsewhere in the city. Local media reported that about 400 people were held in Mumbai.
The movement is protesting revisions to voter lists that critics allege favor Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. The Election Commission has denied manipulating the lists, while Kumar has not commented on demands that he resign.
The U.N. human rights office urged India to respect the right to peaceful assembly and pursue dialogue. India’s mission in Geneva rejected the criticism as unwarranted interference, saying constitutional assembly rights remain subject to reasonable public-order restrictions. The Cockroach Janta Party condemned its leaders’ detentions and said demonstrations would continue.
