U.S. Vice President JD Vance said Iran must make a “meaningful” reduction in its nuclear enrichment capacity to meet Washington’s conditions for ending the seven-month war, while emphasizing that the United States remains open to an agreement.
In an interview with Reuters, Vance said Tehran must take concrete action rather than promise future reductions. “If you don't want a nuclear weapon, then why do you need 60% enriched fuel?” he said, adding that Washington would not “trade words for actions.”
The United States and Iran have exchanged proposals in recent weeks aimed at ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest offer and has warned that U.S. military operations could intensify after the November midterm elections. Vance previously brokered a provisional peace agreement in June, but it quickly collapsed.
Vance also said Washington was uncertain about how decisions are made in Tehran following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint U.S.-Israeli strikes at the start of the war. The United States has been negotiating with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, but Vance questioned how much authority they hold.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei rejected that concern, saying U.S. officials understand Iran’s decision-making system and blaming contradictory positions and mixed messages from Washington.
