Russian forces struck Ukrainian energy facilities after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking each other’s energy infrastructure, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
Trump wrote Sunday on Truth Social that an energy ceasefire was “effective immediately” and that both parties had agreed. Moscow had not publicly confirmed an agreement by Monday, however, while Zelenskyy said the announcement had surprised Kyiv and that Ukraine was seeking further details.
Zelenskyy said Russia hit at least six energy targets in subsequent attacks. He reported a drone strike on a Kyiv power plant that caused outages in the capital, as well as an attack on the CHP-5 thermal power plant in Kharkiv. He also identified a gas facility and a petrol station among the targets.
Ukraine supports halting attacks on energy infrastructure if Russia does the same, Zelenskyy said. He added that Ukraine had not attacked Russian refineries overnight and accused Moscow of showing that it did not intend to observe the proposed ceasefire.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said discussions about a possible energy ceasefire were continuing and that more information would be provided later.
Trump’s announcement followed his decision to temporarily ease U.S. sanctions on Russian diesel and unveil a diesel purchasing deal with Moscow. Ukraine and several European allies criticized that decision, while European Union governments said they would maintain pressure on Russia and approved additional sanctions.
