Five people were killed and eight injured after a four-storey residential building collapsed in New Seemapuri in northeast Delhi on Wednesday afternoon, October 7.
The building, located near the Idgah Machhli Mandi, came down at about 3:15 p.m. Rescue teams recovered three victims initially, including 21-year-old Gulafsa, who was about four months pregnant, a 12-year-old girl and a child aged around one-and-a-half years. Two more bodies, identified by an official as Nusrat alias Guria and Hajra Bibi, were later found in the debris, raising the death toll to five.
The injured were taken to Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital in Tahirpur. Personnel from the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Disaster Management Authority, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board took part in the rescue and debris-clearing operation.
Officials said the 20- to 25-year-old occupied building had developed cracks after earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi on Tuesday evening. Demolition work was also reportedly underway at an adjoining building. The exact cause of the collapse has not been established and will be investigated.
The collapse damaged adjoining structures and brought down part of the boundary wall of a nearby mosque. Police registered a case on allegations including negligence and causing death by negligence and said efforts were underway to arrest the building owners.
