Indian opposition leaders marched toward the Supreme Court in New Delhi and filed a petition against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls, Deutsche Welle reported.
The INDIA alliance delegation included Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Saugata Roy, Akhilesh Yadav and Tejashwi Prasad Yadav. The alliance is demanding Kumar’s resignation and challenging a revision of voter rolls that it says resulted in mass deletions. Supreme Court administrators permitted a limited group of opposition leaders and their lawyers to enter the court complex to submit the petition.
The protests coincided with a Delhi Police announcement that Jantar Mantar was no longer a designated protest site. Police listed Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground as alternatives. The Cockroach Janata Party, whose planned protest over the electoral-roll allegations was halted by police on Saturday, objected to the change and demanded a new protest date.
At a separate discussion in Kerala, former Supreme Court judge Kurian Joseph called for the appointment and service conditions of the Election Commission of India to be enshrined in the Constitution to strengthen its independence. Former Kerala High Court judge K. Balakrishnan Nair said voter removals during the special intensive revision violated principles of natural justice because required procedures were not followed. A youth collective also held a solidarity protest demanding Kumar’s resignation and opposing the removal of Jantar Mantar’s protest-site designation.
