South African jurist Navi Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace, human rights and international law.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Pillay’s work was “a source of hope and inspiration” and described the award as a message to those undermining international legal institutions. Pillay, 85, is a former United Nations high commissioner for human rights and has served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court.

Pillay learned of the award while attending a forum in Nuremberg, Germany. She dedicated it to survivors of international crimes and urged political leaders to respect their legal obligations to protect human rights and refrain from war. During the applause, she joked, “If you clap a little bit more, I may share this prize with Trump.”

Pillay chaired a UN commission of inquiry that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza. Israel has denied that allegation and refused to cooperate with the commission, which also accused Hamas of war crimes and violations of international humanitarian law during its Oct. 7, 2023, attack.

President Donald Trump called Pillay a “mystery person” and denounced the Nobel Committee’s decision as “disgraceful and embarrassing.” Israel’s Foreign Ministry and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also sharply criticized the award and rejected Pillay’s findings.

Pillay is scheduled to receive the medal, diploma and $1.2 million prize at a ceremony in Oslo on Dec. 10.
