A jury was sworn in Tuesday at Southwark Crown Court in London for the trial of British comedian and actor Russell Brand on rape and sexual assault charges.
Brand, 51, denies three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault involving six women. The alleged offences span 1999 to 2009.
Judge Joel Bennathan selected eight men and four women for the jury, along with one reserve who will sit through the prosecution’s opening. The jurors were instructed not to research Brand or consult previous reporting about allegations against him.
The prosecution, led by Riel Karmy-Jones, is expected to open its case Wednesday morning. Jurors have been told that the trial is expected to last about six weeks, though it could extend to nine.
Brand arrived at court Tuesday accompanied by a security guard. His wife, Laura Gallacher, had attended with him Monday, when jury selection began, but was not with him Tuesday.
