A 59-year-old man was arrested after a stabbing attack injured eight people at a supermarket building in Incheon, west of Seoul, on Tuesday, police said.

The attack began at about 1:40 p.m. as the man moved along an escalator between the second basement level, where a Homeplus supermarket is located, and the second floor above ground, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, citing Namdong Police Station. The suspect allegedly had knives fastened to both hands.

Shoppers subdued the man before police officers took him into custody. All eight victims were transported to hospitals, with one reported to be in cardiac arrest. Authorities established an emergency medical center on the building’s first floor in case additional casualties were found.

Police said the suspect was carrying a large quantity of drugs and wore an electronic ankle monitor linked to a previous conviction. He reportedly told investigators that he had taken drugs at the time of the attack. Yonhap reported that he had been ordered to wear the monitor through February 2029 after serving a four-year prison term for attempting to murder his former wife.

The Justice Ministry apologized and said it would examine its electronic monitoring and supervision system. Police were investigating the suspect’s motive and the circumstances of the attack, while the acting national police chief ordered stronger preventive measures in crowded public places.
