Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said he would not resign as student-led anti-government demonstrations continued for a third day, with protesters and police clashing in Tirana and unrest spreading to other cities.
The demonstrations began outside the Education Ministry over university conditions, high tuition costs and limited job prospects. Protesters have since demanded Rama’s departure and voiced broader anger over corruption and the government. During clashes this week, demonstrators attacked government buildings and set at least one on fire, while police used tear gas and water cannon.
Police said 51 officers were injured during Wednesday’s unrest and 65 people were arrested on suspicion of attacking officers and damaging public and private property. A Tirana hospital said seven injured protesters sought treatment.
Rama said governments are changed through elections, not revolution, and argued that resigning would betray the mandate he received after winning a fourth term last year. He said he was prepared to discuss education costs but condemned attacks on institutions and threats to public safety.
Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçiu appealed for calm, while opposition Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha praised the protesters. The European Union delegation in Tirana condemned the violence and property destruction and urged demonstrators to exercise restraint.
The student protests follow months of largely peaceful opposition to a planned luxury resort on Albania’s southern coast involving Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump.
