A 19-year-old Illinois man has been charged over an alleged mass-shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in suburban Chicago, after co-workers alerted police to his messages and threats.
Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine faces felony counts of making a terrorist threat and unlawfully possessing a rifle. A judge ordered him detained pending trial after his court appearance Wednesday.
Authorities said a vehicle registered to Paporakis entered the parking lot of a Hindu temple in Aurora shortly after noon on Sunday, October 11, and departed less than 15 minutes later. Prosecutors allege Paporakis later told a co-worker that his rifle had jammed, that he had fled without being seen and that he intended to try again after repairing it. Two co-workers contacted police, and officers arrested him near his home later that day. Police said he appeared to have acted alone.
A search of his residence recovered an AR-style rifle, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, body armour and other tactical equipment, according to investigators. Officers also found an eight-page document attributed to Paporakis that described white-supremacist and neo-Nazi beliefs and advocated violence against people of Indian descent. Prosecutors said he had told colleagues he wanted to kill Indian people.
The Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple in Aurora said it had been targeted and increased security. India’s Ministry of External Affairs called the case a matter of deep concern and urged US authorities to investigate fully and take steps to prevent similar incidents.
