Delhi Police detained several leaders of India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party after protesters crossed barricades and entered Jantar Mantar in central New Delhi on Tuesday, according to the group and video posted online.
The footage showed demonstrators climbing over barriers, running into the site and waving India’s flag before police pursued them. The CJP said those detained included Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde.
The action followed days of protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and an end to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The CJP and opposition supporters allege that voters have been improperly removed from the rolls to benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party. The Election Commission of India has denied wrongdoing, and the allegations have not been independently established.
Authorities imposed extensive restrictions ahead of an October 10 march called by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke. Mobile internet was suspended for 24 hours within a four-kilometre radius of the Janpath-Kartavya Path crossing, while metro and regional rail stations were closed or restricted and some trains were cancelled. The CJP claimed thousands of supporters were detained nationwide before the demonstration.
Delhi Police said Monday that Jantar Mantar, a longstanding venue for demonstrations, was no longer a designated protest site and named three alternative locations. The area remained sealed behind metal barricades under heavy police guard when protesters entered it Tuesday.
