Kenya has confirmed a third Ebola case, a 65-year-old woman who is a close relative and primary contact of the country’s first two patients, the Health Ministry said Friday.
The woman had been in quarantine since October 6. She was isolated after developing fever, a sore throat and malaise, then tested positive for Ebola. Authorities said she was receiving supportive care after an early diagnosis.
All three Kenyan cases are linked. The first patient, a 40-year-old Kenyan businessman who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, travelled through Uganda before flying to Nairobi on October 3. He was admitted to hospital and died on October 5. The second patient, a 39-year-old male relative, developed symptoms while already in quarantine and remains stable, according to Kenya’s Health Ministry.
The ministry said there was no evidence of transmission in the wider community and assessed the risk to the public as low. Of 130 identified contacts, 127 had been traced and placed in quarantine, while efforts continued to locate the remaining three.
The Kenyan cases involve the Bundibugyo strain and are linked to an outbreak in the DRC, where more than 9,000 infections and 4,300 deaths have been reported since May. There is no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for the strain, although vaccine research and human trials are under way.
