Israel is heading toward a closely fought October 27 election, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political future shaped by disputes over the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack and the continuing war in Gaza.
A television poll reported by The Times of Israel put Netanyahu’s bloc ahead of the Zionist opposition parties by 55 parliamentary seats to 50. Neither total reaches the 61 seats needed to control the 120-seat Knesset and form a governing coalition.
Gadi Eisenkot, the former military chief who leads the centre-right Yashar party, pledged Thursday to end Hamas’s rule in Gaza within 18 months if elected. He said he would pursue that goal either through U.S. President Donald Trump’s ceasefire plan, which calls for Hamas’s gradual disarmament and a transfer of authority, or through Israeli military operations against the group’s armed wing.
Eisenkot accused Netanyahu of a “strategic failure,” saying Hamas remained armed and active after three years of war. He also renewed his promise to establish a state commission of inquiry into security failures preceding the October 7 attack, a step Netanyahu’s government has resisted.
The dispute over responsibility intensified Wednesday when a former head of Israel’s Shin Bet domestic security agency sued Netanyahu for defamation over claims concerning the attack, France 24 reported. The Washington Post also described Israeli voters scarred by October 7 as weighing Netanyahu’s future.
Netanyahu remains Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, while his challengers span an opposition divided on many issues but united in seeking to remove him from office.
