Six Flags temporarily closed nine roller coasters at six other North American parks after a 42-year-old man died Monday on the Goliath coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia in Cobb County.
Cobb County police said Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem was ejected from the ride, struck other patrons and fell beneath the attraction. Several other people were injured, though authorities had not released details about their conditions. Witnesses described seeing Kariem fall, while riders were evacuated after the coaster stopped near the top of its track.
Six Flags said park employees and local authorities responded immediately and that it was cooperating with the investigation. The company said it closed similar attractions “out of an abundance of caution” and gave no timetable for reopening them. Including the Georgia Goliath, 10 Six Flags rides were closed.
The additional closures included Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey; Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America in Illinois; Behemoth and Leviathan at Canada’s Wonderland in Ontario; Goliath at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California; Fury 325 and Thunder Striker at Carowinds in North Carolina; and Orion and Diamondback at Kings Island in Ohio.
Eight of those nine coasters were built by Bolliger & Mabillard, which said it was investigating. Six Flags has not identified a shared defect among the rides. The company’s shares fell sharply following reports of the death, dropping more than 10% in after-hours trading Monday and as much as 17.28% Tuesday.
