Fighting has intensified around Yemen’s Taiz governorate, where Houthi forces have encircled government-held areas and disrupted road links, worsening food shortages and fear among residents.
The Iran-backed group has seized several strategically important areas in recent weeks, according to reports cited by France 24, and released footage it said showed operations in Taiz. On Thursday, forces allied with Yemen’s Saudi-backed government said they were repelling a Houthi attack on Dhubab airport in the governorate’s coastal west. The Homeland Shield Force said it and the Southern Giants Brigades were securing the airport.
Elsewhere, authorities in Marib accused the Houthis of increasingly using ballistic missiles against residential neighborhoods. The group has also claimed attacks inside Saudi Arabia, including strikes directed at King Khalid International Airport and Saudi Aramco facilities. Saudi authorities said a weekend airport attack killed at least 13 people and wounded more than 300, while another strike killed one person and injured 11.
The Houthis, meanwhile, said multiple airstrikes hit territory under their control on Tuesday, including Kamaran Island, Qanawis district near Hodeida and sites in Jawf province. Houthi-run Al-Masirah television blamed Saudi Arabia, which did not immediately comment. The rebels also said they shot down a Saudi drone over Saada.
Yemen’s government said it has raised with Beijing allegations that the Houthis sought Chinese-made dual-use components for weapons. China was receptive to information that could support an investigation, Foreign Minister Afrah al-Zouba said.
