North Korea tested two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles off its east coast on Wednesday, state media reported Thursday.
The Korean Central News Agency said the launches were intended to inspect the readiness of underwater combat systems, improve the navy’s ability to carry out strategic missions and demonstrate the reliability of North Korea’s deterrent. KCNA said the tests did not affect the security of neighboring countries. Al Jazeera reported that KCNA identified one weapon as a Pulhwasal-3-31, a cruise missile North Korea had also tested from land the previous week.
Senior military officials, including Workers’ Party Central Military Commission member Kim Jong-sik and Missile Administration chief Jang Chang-ha, oversaw the tests, according to KCNA.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it had monitored the launches from preparations through their cruise and terminal flight phases. A spokesperson assessed that one type of missile was launched from a vertical launch system and the other from a torpedo tube.
Analysts cited by The Japan Times said KCNA photographs suggested the launches involved the Kim Kun Ok Hero, a modified diesel-powered submarine unveiled in 2023. North Korean state media did not provide technical flight details. The test followed North Korea’s launch of tactical ballistic missiles toward the same waters earlier in the week.
