Irish author Sally Rooney and her publisher, Faber, have agreed to stop supplying her books in the United Kingdom because UK earnings could be directed to Palestine Action, a group proscribed under British terrorism law.
Rooney said she intended to continue supporting Palestine Action and use proceeds from her work to help the group. Faber said current legislation meant it could not pass UK earnings to her, adding that selling an author’s work without paying the resulting income was “an unconscionable situation for a publisher.” It will continue selling her books in other territories.
The decision does not require retailers to remove existing copies. Books already held by shops and online sellers can remain on sale until stocks run out, according to The Irish Times. British booksellers have been seeking additional copies before distributors exhaust their supplies.
The UK government proscribed Palestine Action in July 2025 after actions targeting military and weapons-related sites, including the vandalism of two aircraft at a Royal Air Force base. Supporting a proscribed organization can carry a prison sentence of up to 14 years.
Rooney, whose novels include *Normal People*, *Conversations with Friends* and *Intermezzo*, previously cancelled a trip to England because of concerns she could be arrested. Palestine Action is challenging its proscription, with a UK Supreme Court hearing scheduled for November.
