At least 34 children and a teacher were killed when the roof of a private school collapsed during morning classes in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, on Thursday, according to the latest toll reported by police and rescue officials. Earlier hospital and official accounts put the number of children killed between 27 and 33 as casualty figures were revised during the rescue operation.
Rescue workers spent several hours clearing rubble at the Al-Khair Education Centre after an upper roof fell onto classrooms below, causing two storeys to cave in. Dozens of children were injured, with several treated for serious head injuries. Officials said the rescue operation was later completed and the debris cleared.
Accounts of the cause differed. A local rescue official told CNN that heavy overnight rain had destabilized the two-storey building, while Peshawar police chief Mian Saeed said construction had overloaded an already weak structure. Authorities opened an investigation into the collapse and arrested the school’s owner.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed officials to provide medical care to the injured and promised a thorough investigation. President Asif Ali Zardari also called for a comprehensive inquiry. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi ordered structural safety audits of educational institutions across the province.
