Hurricane Simon weakens after lashing Mexico’s Pacific coast

Hurricane Simon weakened to a Category 2 storm on Monday after lashing Mexico’s Pacific coast with powerful winds and torrential rain, while separate impacts from Tropical Storm Rachel contributed to a combined toll of two deaths and 10 people missing.

Simon’s eye remained offshore after the storm had reached Category 4 strength, with winds of about 240-249 km/h (150-155 mph). It flooded homes and roads and brought down trees and power poles in coastal communities. Authorities placed 28 municipalities in Jalisco and Colima under the highest cyclone alert, suspended classes and non-essential activities, opened shelters and temporarily closed Puerto Vallarta International Airport.

President Claudia Sheinbaum urged residents in coastal areas of Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Michoacán to remain sheltered until officials declared the danger over. The US National Hurricane Center warned that Simon could produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in mountainous terrain, as well as dangerous storm surge and destructive waves.

In Guerrero, a 71-year-old man died when a wall collapsed in Chilpancingo, Governor Evelyn Salgado said. In Baja California, Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila reported that a young girl had died and at least 10 people were missing after Rachel reached the state. More than 50 people were being assisted in temporary shelters.

Simon was forecast to move northwest before turning back toward Mexico, potentially making landfall near Sinaloa on Thursday. Rachel weakened into a post-tropical cyclone as it moved toward Southern California.
