Indian police detained Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke and several others on Friday as hundreds of supporters gathered in central New Delhi to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Authorities closed Central Park in Connaught Place, the rally’s planned venue, and deployed thousands of police and paramilitary personnel. About 200 to 300 protesters initially assembled outside the park, according to the BBC, before walking around its perimeter with Indian flags and chanting slogans.
Police had earlier served Dipke with a notice barring the march, citing prohibitory orders against public gatherings. The BBC reported that officers later surrounded him near his car and placed him in a police vehicle. Police had not publicly stated the grounds for his detention. The CJP said it lost contact with Dipke and alleged that he was taken to an undisclosed location without access to lawyers.
The demonstration was partly organized in support of CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, who were jailed for five days after crossing barricades on Tuesday to enter Jantar Mantar, a former designated protest site.
The youth-led CJP and opposition groups accuse the Election Commission of revising voter rolls to benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. More than 130 million names were removed during the revision. The commission denies favoring any party and says the changes targeted duplicate, deceased and fraudulent entries, while wrongly removed voters can re-enrol.
