Dozens of masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians harvesting olives near Abu Falah in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting trees on fire and throwing rocks, according to witnesses and multiple news reports.
About 80 settlers descended on a terraced grove, some carrying gas canisters, clubs or firearms. Palestinians retreated downhill and some threw stones back. Israeli military vehicles arrived during the violence, but the assault continued; soldiers fired tear gas toward Palestinians. Reuters reported seeing an armed settler fire a gun. The Israeli military later said troops fired warning shots and then toward a person believed to pose a threat.
At least two people were hospitalized near Ramallah, including Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine. The newspaper said Levine, who wore clearly visible press markings, was knocked down, repeatedly kicked and robbed of cameras and a phone. Palestinian authorities reported attacks in eight villages on Friday and said at least 20 people were injured across the West Bank. Settlers also reportedly burned three vehicles near Turmus Ayya.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the circumstances of the attack on Levine were unclear, blamed a confrontation involving Arabs, activists and Israeli youths, and condemned violence against anyone. The U.S. State Department condemned criminal violence and supported an investigation and accountability.
Israeli monitoring group Yesh Din has recorded at least 170 settler attacks since September 27, around the start of the olive harvest.
