The European Union has approved sanctions listings targeting almost 1,600 individuals and entities tied to Russia’s military-industrial complex, in what the Council of the EU described as its largest-ever package of such listings over Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Reuters and AP reported that the measures cover Russians and companies linked to the country’s arms industry. The Kyiv Independent also reported that the EU adopted sanctions connected to Russia’s illegal election in occupied Ukrainian territories.
In a separate expansion of EU restrictions concerning North Korea, the bloc sanctioned three individuals and four entities over support for Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs and cooperation with Russia. Those listed include Ri Song Jin, a North Korean missile official accused of training Russian forces to use North Korean missiles; Russian developer Samolet Group and its chief executive, Anna Akishina; and businessman Vladimir Sokolov. Shipping and agricultural companies accused of facilitating restricted trade were also targeted.
The North Korea-related measures impose EU travel bans and asset freezes and prohibit funds or economic resources from being made available to those listed. The EU cited North Korean troop deployments to Russia, weapons exchanges, employment of North Korean workers and joint business projects among its concerns about deepening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang.
