Katie Zacharia is leaving her role as White House press secretary after five days on the job, following scrutiny of her first briefing and questions about her legal credentials.
A senior White House official said Friday that Zacharia was “transitioning out.” President Donald Trump told reporters he had advised her to reconsider the position but denied firing her, saying she had been treated unfairly by the media.
Trump appointed Zacharia on Oct. 9 to succeed Karoline Leavitt. Zacharia, previously a communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group, began work Oct. 12 and held her only briefing the next day. The roughly 14-minute appearance included questions from three conservative-leaning or Trump-friendly outlets. Zacharia later said she had received little preparation.
Her background also drew attention after she was asked which state’s bar examination she had passed and replied, “When I moved to China.” The Wall Street Journal reported that she had not passed the exam. Zacharia later said she had misheard the question and that the result was inconsequential because she moved to China after graduating from Pepperdine law school. Campaign for Accountability subsequently filed a complaint with the State Bar of California over her statements.
In her first public statement after the announcement, Zacharia praised Trump and said it had been “an honor to work for him.” Her post on X included a photograph of the two in the Oval Office.
