Romanian rescuers searched Thursday for seven sailors missing from one of two chemical tankers that caught fire in the Black Sea near the mouth of the Danube River’s Sulina Canal.
Romania’s naval authority said the San Marino-flagged *Wine Trader* issued an emergency alert after catching fire overnight. Five of its 12 crew members were rescued, while seven remained missing. The Interior Ministry deployed two Black Hawk helicopters and two vessels carrying medical personnel, but said large waves were preventing rescuers from operating safely.
The Comoros-flagged chemical and oil tanker *Yara J* caught fire in the same area late Wednesday. All of its crew were evacuated safely.
The fires followed incursions by Russian drones into Romanian airspace, but Romanian officials did not explicitly link the drones to either incident. Defence Minister Radu Miruta said an investigation was under way to determine whether a drone struck a ship.
Both tankers had been anchored near the Sulina Canal, a route connecting the Danube with the Black Sea that is used heavily by shipping from Ukraine. The incidents follow drone strikes on at least five other cargo ships near the Romanian and Bulgarian coasts during the previous 10 days. Bulgaria summoned Russia’s ambassador after a vessel sank off its coast following a drone attack on Tuesday, although Bulgarian officials said there was no clear evidence identifying who carried out that attack.
