Trump Criticizes Ukraine’s Renewed Strikes on Russian Oil Refineries

President Donald Trump called Ukraine’s renewed attacks on Russian oil refineries “a disgrace,” arguing that the strikes were contributing to higher global fuel prices.
In a Newsmax interview aired Thursday, Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was “not doing a good service for the world” by targeting facilities that produce diesel. Trump also repeated that he was “not a big fan” of Zelenskyy and said he found the Ukrainian leader more difficult to deal with than Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Ukraine resumed refinery strikes after briefly halting them following what The Guardian described as an energy ceasefire unilaterally declared by Trump. Zelenskyy said Kyiv abandoned the pause because Russia continued attacking Ukrainian power plants.
The dispute follows Trump’s decision to ease sanctions on Russia in exchange for Moscow releasing more diesel onto global markets. Zelenskyy criticized that agreement, saying it would enable Russia to continue its invasion.
Arriving in Brussels for talks with European Union leaders on Friday, Zelenskyy did not directly address Trump’s latest comments. He thanked the EU for its support and said Ukraine wanted to end the war quickly, but saw no indication that Russia was ready to do so.
Tensions between Washington and Kyiv also increased after Ukraine reported restrictions on Starlink service that disrupted drone operations and air defenses. British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said his U.S. counterpart, Pete Hegseth, later assured him the satellite communications service had been restored.
