A nearly 12-foot alligator dragged a 71-year-old fisherman from the shore of a pond in Winter Garden, Florida, killing him Friday, authorities said.
Steve Hamilton was fishing at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park at about 5 p.m. when the alligator pulled him into the water. Emergency crews responded after a 911 call, but other alligators nearby complicated rescue efforts, according to local officials. Hamilton’s body was recovered about two hours later.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said an 11-foot, 8-inch alligator was trapped and removed from the scene. Winter Garden Police Capt. Michael Mason said the pond is connected to Lake Apopka, where alligators are common, and authorities had not received a report of one near the shoreline before the attack.
Officials urged visitors to remain alert and keep their distance from wildlife. The attack was Florida’s second reported fatal alligator encounter of the year, following the death of 31-year-old Brittany Clark while swimming near Orlando in June.
