Indian authorities have ordered Bollywood actor Imran Khan to leave the country by October 28 after he joined an October 10 protest in Mumbai demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Khan, a US citizen who holds an Overseas Citizen of India card, was briefly detained with other demonstrators at August Kranti Maidan. Mumbai Police said he participated despite not being an Indian citizen, and the Foreigners Regional Registration Office served him with a notice alleging violations of immigration law. OCI status allows foreign citizens of Indian origin to live and work in India but does not grant Indian citizenship or the right to vote or contest elections.
Khan has moved the Bombay High Court to challenge the notice. His lawyer said no law or rule governing OCI cardholders prohibits them from participating in a protest and described the order as drastic.
The action followed a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya, who alleged that Khan’s participation breached the law. Somaiya welcomed the authorities’ decision. Khan said at the demonstration that he was attending as a Mumbai resident and was not representing any organisation.
The protest concerned voter-list revisions and allegations about the Election Commission’s conduct. India’s election authorities deny allegations of vote fraud.
