Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has asked parliament to convene in an emergency session and authorise defence assistance to Saudi Arabia if Riyadh requests it, as Houthi attacks on the kingdom intensify.
Speaking at a military academy graduation ceremony on Saturday, el-Sisi said Egypt was prepared to take “any measure” to protect Saudi Arabia but stressed that such action would be defensive rather than an effort to attack another country. The request follows strikes from Yemen’s Houthis against Saudi airports and oil facilities.
Reports gave differing casualty figures for an attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. Middle East Eye reported that the death toll had risen to 13, citing Saudi aviation authorities and Reuters, while Al Jazeera reported 14 deaths. More than 300 people were wounded. Airlines including Lufthansa and Air France-KLM suspended Riyadh services, according to Middle East Eye.
Iran, meanwhile, offered to facilitate talks. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan that pursuing a military solution would further complicate the crisis and said Tehran was ready to assist dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Araghchi also discussed Yemen and regional stability with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi.
The Houthis have warned airlines, airport workers and travellers against using Saudi airports and airspace, except airports serving Mecca and Medina. Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of encouraging Houthi attacks, an allegation Tehran rejects.
